In a significant move to bolster the cognitive development of rural students, the Greater Atlanta Telangana Society (GATeS) organized a massive chess board distribution drive across government schools in the Jagtial District. The initiative, facilitated by GATeS President Ramana Gandra along with the current Board members aims to pivot students’ attention away from digital distractions and toward the strategic depth of the “Game of Kings.”

A Move Against Digital Dependency

Speaking at the event held at the Old High School premises, the dignitaries emphasized the urgent need to address the rising dependency on smartphones among the youth. “In current times, smartphones are making us think less and depend more on devices”. “We believe that by spending time playing chess, we can re-awaken the natural problem-solving and analytical skills of our students. It’s about choosing a chessboard over a screen.”

Legislative Support for Cognitive Excellence

The distribution of 300 chess boards to 48 government and Zilla Parishad schools was graced by Jagtial MLA Dr. M. Sanjay Kumar. Commending the initiative, Dr. Kumar highlighted that chess is more than just a game; it is a tool for enhancing cognitive skills, patience, and discipline. Reflecting on the changing times, Dr. Kumar noted, “When we were growing up, our days were different. We didn’t have the constant distractions that exist today. It is heartening to see GATeS bringing back focus to activities that truly challenge and grow the mind.”

From Vision to Reality

The program also featured Sudheer Kodati, founder of Chess Network, who played a pivotal role in the initiative. Kodati shared the inspiration behind the project, recollecting his recent interactions with children. He noted a concerning shift in how young minds process information and expressed his commitment to changing that trajectory through chess education.

Two Decades of “Back Home” Service

This initiative is part of the broader Greater Atlanta Telangana Association (GATeS) Backhome Service project, a cornerstone of the society’s mission for over 20 years. While GATeS is based in Atlanta, its heart remains in Telangana. For two decades, the organization has consistently delivered:

  • Educational Support: Providing infrastructure, books, and scholarships to rural schools.
  • Health Initiatives: Organizing medical camps and wellness awareness in remote villages.
  • Humanitarian Aid: Offering immediate relief during natural disasters and supporting local
    welfare programs.

The event was attended by a host of dignitaries, including Municipal Chairperson Sameendla Vani Srinivas, Mandal Education Officer Chandrakala, Anand Rao Boinpally, Venu Dhannapuneni and various community leaders, all of whom lauded GATeS for its unwavering commitment to the academics and personal enrichment of students in Telangana
