University of Georgia is set for standalone medical school by 2026

The University of Georgia is set for its own medical school and could enroll students as early as 2026. This is part of a $2 billion plan by Governor Brian Kemp. As of now, the Medical College of Georgia with a campus in Athens, is the only public medical school in the state of Georgia.

The current Athens campus was opened in 2010 and has a class size of 60 students. $50 million of the proposal will go towards the medical school and considers transitioning the partnership to a standalone and independently accredited medical school.

Governor Brian Kemp’s intention is to address Georgia’s need for more physicians and said the school would go a long way to help address the medical workforce gap that Georgia has. Georgians are appreciating Mr. Kemp’s long-term plan.
