Telugu Canada Honors Educationist & Poet Bandla Madhava Rao on Telugu Language Day

Toronto, Canada, August 30, 2026: The Telugu Cultural Association of Greater Toronto (TCAGT) proudly organized a special felicitation ceremony on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at the Mississauga Valley Community Centre Auditorium to commemorate Telugu Bhasha Dinotsavam and Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy Jayanthi. The event brought together Telugu families from across the Greater Toronto Area to celebrate the Telugu language and literary heritage while honoring renowned poet, writer, educator, and social thinker Sri Bandla Madhava Rao Garu.

The program commenced with a warm welcome by TCAGT Secretary Pravalika Koona, who invited the distinguished guests and executive leadership to the stage. The dignitaries included TCAGT President Siva Yellala, Board of Trustees member Devi Chowdhary, Senior Advisor Surya Bezawada, Chief Guest Sri Bandla Madhava Rao Garu, and Special Guest of Honor Sri Riaz Ali Garu.

In his opening remarks, President Siva Yellala highlighted TCAGT’s ongoing mission to preserve and promote Telugu language, culture, and literary traditions in Canada. He spoke about the historical significance of Telugu Bhasha Dinotsavam and paid tribute to the contributions of Gidugu Ramamurthy Pantulu, whose efforts made Telugu more accessible to the common people.

He also reflected on the vision of TCAGT’s founders and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to strengthening Telugu identity among future generations. Board of Trustees member Devi Chowdhary shared her admiration for the literary works of Sri Bandla Madhava Rao Garu. She spoke about the profound impact his writings have had on readers and recited selected poems from his acclaimed collection “Polamgatla Venta.”

She expressed her deep emotional connection with several passages from his literary work and requested the author to share additional insights. Senior Advisor Surya Bezawada welcomed the guests and attendees, reflecting on his more than two decades of involvement with TCAGT. He emphasized the invaluable role the association has played in fostering cultural awareness among Telugu families in Canada, supporting businesses, creating community networks, and providing opportunities for children to learn and embrace their Telugu heritage.

The event also recognized Sri Riaz Ali Garu, recently appointed as one of the APNRT State Coordinators for Canada by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. A TCAGT Life Member and former executive commiƩee member, Riaz Ali Garu served the organization in various leadership roles including Director, Treasurer, and Webmaster. During his remarks, he recalled his years of service and highlighted his contributions to modernizing the association’s digital presence and growing membership participation.

He was felicitated by Secretary Pravalika Koona and Trustee Devi Chowdhary with a traditional shawl and floral bouquet. Introducing the Chief Guest, Senior Advisor Surya Bezawada noted that Sri Bandla Madhava Rao Garu had been highly recommended to the association by two distinguished literary luminaries. The first was Sri Thotakura Prasada Garu of the United States, a respected supporter and promoter of Telugu literature and culture. Through his active involvement in literary activities and community engagement, he has been instrumental in fostering appreciation for Telugu language and literary values among Telugu communities worldwide. Sri Prasada Garu played a key role in introducing Sri Bandla Madhava Rao Garu to TCAGT.

The second was Professor Dr. Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad Garu, a Padma Bhushan awardee, eminent author, scholar, educator, and celebrated orator. Widely recognized for his contributions to Telugu literature and Indian languages, Dr. Yarlagadda strongly encouraged the TCAGT Board to engage with Sri Bandla Madhava Rao Garu and highlighted his remarkable contributions to education, literature, poetry, and social transformation.

Following these introductions, Sri Bandla Madhava Rao Garu was invited to deliver the keynote address. In his speech, Sri Bandla Madhava Rao Garu commended TCAGT’s leadership, volunteers, and members for their dedicated efforts in preserving Telugu language and culture in Canada. He acknowledged the significant role played by Telugu organizations across Canada and North America in providing plaƞorms for cultural exchange and language learning among younger generations. He emphasized the responsibility of Non-Resident Indians to contribute both to their adopted countries and to their homeland.

Speaking passionately about the beauty and richness of the Telugu language, Sri Madhava Rao Garu captivated the audience with literary insights from his acclaimed work “Polamgatla Venta.” He elaborated on two of his notable poems, “Yedadhikoka Saraina” and “Bathuku Teravaindhi,” illustrating their deeper social and philosophical themes. His eloquent presentation and mastery of the Telugu language earned enthusiastic applause from the audience.

The keynote address was followed by an engaging interactive session, during which attendees posed thoughƞul questions on literature, education, language preservation, and social responsibility. Sri Madhava Rao Garu responded with remarkable clarity and enthusiasm, making the session both informative and inspiring. As a mark of appreciation, President Siva Yellala and Senior Advisor Surya Bezawada felicitated Sri Bandla Madhava Rao Garu and his wife Dr. Uma Rani with traditional shawls and floral bouquets in recognition of his outstanding literary contributions and inspiring address.
