Throughout the centuries, India has produced many great saints and illumined teachers. One of the greatest of these was Swami Vivekananda. You are aware that Swami Vivekananda was the first who introduced ancient scriptures of India, Yoga and Vedanta to America in 1893. He felt the need of Vedanta here in USA. Vivekananda delivered lectures and classes in the United States for about three years and established the first two Vedanta Centers. The parent organization in India, called Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, operates about 150 centers worldwide for the betterment of social, economic, educational and emergency needs of the public. The well-known Ramakrishna Math & Mission, India is known as Vedanta Society of USA. They carry the work of Swami Vivekananda in the western countries.
SWAMI VIVEKANANDA DID NOT VISIT ATLANTA DURING HIS SOJOURNS IN AMERICA, BUT ATLANTA IS VERY MUCH FORTUNATE TO HAVE AN INSTITUTION “VEDANTA CENTER OF ATLANTA” DEDICATED TO THE IDEALS OF TRINITY SRI RAMAKRISHNA PARAMAHAMSA, SRI SARADA DEVI AND SWAMI VIVEKANANDA. The Vedanta center of Atlanta was established in 1976 and since then is holding regular classes and spiritual congregations at the center. People of various faiths regularly attend the center’s services. On weekdays scriptural classes, books on Vedanta are read and studied in group discussions. On weekends special discourses are held by visiting guests. There is no charge for classes, talks, worship, meditation, retreats and special events held throughout the year.
Atlanta center’s activities are being carried under the guidance of Swami Sarvadevananda Ji, President of Vedanta Society of southern California. Vedanta Center of Atlanta had many joyful weekends in 2024 with visiting swamis: Swami Atmajnanananda from the Washington D.C. center; Swami Harinamananda from San Diego; Swami Yogatmananda from Providence, Rhode Island; Swami Chidekanananda from Los Angeles; Swami Chidbrahmananada from Colorado and many more.
